Egrets and herons, oh my!
Big birds nesting in large numbers at Palo Alto baylands

 | They're large and white with spectacular plumage pompadours and they make otherworldly sounds like ET. Snowy egrets are flocking to the Palo Alto Baylands this spring, building nests high in the trees.
Black-crowned herons with bright ruby-colored eyes are also nesting in large numbers in the trees near the north side of the duck pond. The birds are large and visible without binoculars, but bringing a pair enables visitors to see them in detail and perhaps catch a glimpse of chicks in the large nests. Look for the long white "rat tail" plumage hanging down the back of the herons' heads.

Posted by beautiful baylands, a resident of the Midtown neighborhood, on Jun 7, 2011 at 10:53 am The Palo Alto baylands are a great place to admire our native wildlife. With the bicycle bridge over Hwy 101 near Oregon Expressway and the undercrossing near Fabian Way, the baylands are very easy to visit by bicycle or by just walking.

You can also find other birds such as Bullock's Orioles nesting in the same area as the herons, though the nests are a lot harder to spot.
