A memorial service for slain East Palo Alto community leader David Lewis is scheduled for Sunday (June 20) at 2 p.m. at Costano Elementary School, 2695 Fordham St. in East Palo Alto. The service will be followed by a dinner and remembrance at 5 p.m. at the offices of the nonprofit Free at Last, 1796 Bay Road.

Lewis was a towering figure in the East Palo Alto community. He co-founded Free at Last, a nonprofit organization dedicated to treating substance abuse and its underlying causes and was the chief architect in the East Palo Alto Parole Reentry Program, a pilot program that helps reintegrate released felons back into mainstream society.

He was gunned down in a parking area at Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo June 9 following an argument with an as-yet unknown assailant. Police are still investigating the killing and are working hard on leads, according to Sgt. Dave Norris, spokesman for San Mateo police.

For information about the memorial service, call the office of Free At Last, 650-462-6999.

This year's East Palo Alto Juneteenth celebration, which celebrates the emancipation of slaves in Texas -- more than two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation -- will be dedicated to Lewis. Juneteenth takes place Saturday (June 19) starting at 10 a.m. at Bell Street Park in East Palo Alto.

David was responsible for turning more lives around than just about anyone in this community. He was selfless and personified love in action. I think anyone who wants to be inspired could benefit by coming to David's memorial to witness the miracles that took place in the recovery community he created. Thank you David. My heart goes out to your family and all of your friends...........

I never met David Lewis, but I surely wish I had. What a wonderful person he was, and what a tragedy that he died like that. I'm so very sad for his family, his friends, and all the people he helped in the community.

David was bigger than life and held that much passion for what he was doing. I had the privilage to work with him for a short time in 1998 at the Oregon Men's State Penn and he made an indelible impression on me as an inspiration to continue the work of supporting people in the pursuit of their dreams, no matter what the outward circumstances of their life or appearance. David, thank you for your amazing self and amazing hugs. You are already missed.
