 | Blake Lueders, one of the top football prospects from the state of Indiana, gave Stanford a verbal commitment Sunday. The defensive end/tight end from Zionsville High took his official visit the previous weekend.
Lueders uncommitted from Notre Dame to accept the Cardinal offer. A twitter alert was published by the Irish Sports Daily early Sunday evening to that regard: "Four-star DE Blake Lueders has confirmed with ISD that he de-committed from Notre Dame and committed to Stanford."
Lueders orginally committed to Notre Dame in June, but waivered because of the coaching change in South Bend. Randy Hart, who helped recruit Leuders as the Irish defensive line coach, was recently hired by Stanford for the same position and was apparently on campus when Leuders visited.
Brian Polian, who was hired to replace the departed DJ Durkin as special teams coach, also coached at Notre Dame last year.
In a Notre Dame football blog, Lueders' father wrote: "Perhaps the greatest compliment that Blake has received was the early offer from Coach Jim Harbaugh at Stanford. Coach Harbaugh's football knowledge and pedigree are impeccable, being third in Heisman trophy balloting, the first round draft pick of the Bears, and on a very short list of those on the Colts' ring of fame at the RCA domes and Lucas field. Stanford is building an impressive program, and their 2009 recruiting class is current ranked as the 11th best football recruiting class in the nation by scout.com."
Rivals.com suggested in September that Lueders, rated the fourth-best prospect from the state of Indiana, "is possibly the most underrated prospect in the entire nation."
Lueders was named Indiana's Mr. Football as a senior. He had 93 tackles, three fumble recoveries and one interception despite missing a game due to surgery.
Wrestling
Punahou (HI) High 141-pound senior Angus Galen McCleary became Stanford's latest recruit after giving the Cardinal his verbal commitment last week.
He joins November's group of five seniors who signed letters during the early period: Dan Scherer (Mary Institute Country Day, MO), Alan Yen (Saratoga, CA), Kyle Pollock (Wiggins, CO), Luke Amuchastegui (Phoenix, OR) and Garrett Schaner (Big Rapids, MI).
Amuchastegui's older brother, Nick, is currently wrestling for the Cardinal.
Last season, the younger Amuchastegui was ranked No. 1 in Class 4A at 152 pounds before a broken ankle sidelined him from postseason competition.
Current Stanford wrester Zack Giesen also competed in the same Oregon prep league as Amuchastegui.
