25 evacuated after fire in Downtown North
One condominium unit damaged after fire spreads from patio
|
About 25 people had to evacuate an Everett Avenue condominium complex Tuesday morning because of a fire at one of the building's units.
The fire began at about 4:46 a.m. in a first-floor patio of the three-story building at 360 Everett Ave., near Bryant Street. It then spread to a first-floor unit, damaging one room, according to Barbara Cimino, emergency manager for the Palo Alto Fire Department.
Cimino said firefighters contained the flames within 20 minutes. There were no reported injuries, she said.
Just before noon, power was restored to all units, except the damaged one, she said.
One of the building's residents reportedly woke up to the sound of the fire and began knocking on doors and telling other residents to leave the building. The resident then used a garden hose to keep the flames from spreading until firefighters arrived.
Cimino said two residents had to be carried out of the building by Palo Alto police and Menlo Park firefighters because of physical limitations. The American Red Cross was also on hand Tuesday morning to offer assistance to the residents.
Fire officials were investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the damages to the condominium unit Tuesday morning. Cimino couldn't say if the one or two residents who lived in the damaged unit would have to be displaced.— Gennady Sheyner
