Nnemkadi Ogwumike, Jayne Appel and Jeanette Pohlen each turned in a double-double as the Stanford women's basketball team opened its season with a convincing 89-56 victory over host Old Dominion on Friday night.
Kayla Pedersen also reached double figures in scoring as the second-ranked Cardinal won its ninth consecutive season opener and improved to 25-11 overall.
Ogwumike led the charge with 25 points and 12 rebounds, while Appel added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Pohlen recorded 15 points to go with 10 assists.
"I just tried to do what I need to do for my team," Ogwumike said. "Whatever they need me to do, rebound, pass, anything, I just do it."
Pedersen scored 14 points and added six rebounds for Stanford, which plays at Rutgers on Sunday at 11 a.m. Appel blocked four shots, increasing her Stanford career record to 219.
Appel needs 346 points and 47 rebounds to become the third member of the 2,000-point, 1,000-rebound club with Val Whiting and Nicole Powell.
Stanford scored the game's first seven points and it really never got much closer. Roz Gold-Onwude's fast break layup less than six minutes into the game gave the Cardinal a double-digit lead at 16-6 during the midst of a 22-0 run.
Stanford went nearly four minutes without scoring after the protracted rally and still led 53-23 at halftime. The Cardinal held a 38-point lead at one point in the first half.
Freshman post Joslyn Tinkle's first college shot attempt was a made 3-pointer that gave the Cardinal its 53rd point with 55 seconds left in the first 20 minutes.
Michelle Harrison did not play due to a sore back.
