Gunn senior gathers shoes for those in need

Gunn High School senior Alexandra Yesian has reached her goal of donating 1,000 pairs of shoes to the Ecumenical Hunger Program (EHP), a nonprofit organization that helps low-income families in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto and Menlo Park with food, clothing and support.

Yesian started her "Got Extra Shoes?" program last summer.

It wasn't easy but it was all worth the stress, Yesian, 17, said recently as she closed in on her goal.

She said she chose shoes because she loves shoes and felt that everyone needs a good-fitting pair. She put ads in the school paper and on Fogster, an online advertising forum. Each day after school, she swam through three hours of synchronized swim practice and an in-box full of messages from people wanting to donate.

"It was very important for me to get kids' shoes because children's feet are constantly growing, but I accepted anything in good condition," Yesian said.

Shoes came in from all over the community, and many pairs had stories. A dying neighbor left his shoes to Alexandra so she could give them to those in need. A group of triathlon runners picked up unclaimed shoes after a race. They even donated goggles and swim caps to her swim team.

What started as a solo effort soon turned into a family affair. Until Yesian got her driver's license, her mother, Charlotte, pitched in by transporting carloads of shoes to the EHP office. Her father and brother put up fliers at their offices.

When Melanie Jones-Carter, administrative manager at EHP, first met Yesian in May, she had already collected 688 pairs.

"It was quite refreshing to meet someone that had figured out how their passion could help others," she said.

Yesian met her goal, with 11 pairs of shoes extra, last week.

The project has helped raise the profile of EHP, which supplies emergency relief to families and individuals on the Peninsula. The program accepts food, clothing and household essentials year round and its office is located at 2411 Pulgas Ave., East Palo Alto.

thanks for this article. What great work she and her family did. Please note that when you donate money to EHP, they get a lot of bang for your buck. I think it's something like eery dollar buys $3-4 of food. They're a great organization who have been providing necessities for many, many years. Every time I drive by, I see young and old there, including many children.

Is she still taking donations? Can you just drop off items and EHP?

Alexandra is still happy to take donations. Send an Email to

GotExtraShoes@Gmail.com and she will make the arrangements with you. I am her mother and I do some pick-ups and some people drop the shoes off at our house.

Thank you for your help!
