 | Sophomore goalkeeper Alessandra Moss recorded four of her game-high seven saves in the first 12 minutes of the game as the Stanford field hockey team beat visiting Longwood, 6-1, in the semifinals of the NorPac Conference championships Friday at Stanford's Varsity Turf.
Junior midfielder Xanthe Travlos scored twice for the 15th-ranked Cardinal, which set a school record for victories in a season. Travlos also added an assist as Stanford advances to Saturday's 1:30 p.m. title match against California, with a berth in the NCAA Play-In game at stake.
The Bears beat Radford, 3-0, in the other semifinal.
Moss' early defensive efforts allowed the Cardinal (15-4) to take an early lead and continue building on it, even after Longwood tied the score in the 15th minute.
Freshman Becky Dru gave Stanford the lead for good when she scored with 6:15 remaining in the first half. Dru converted a penalty corner with assists going to Jaimee Erickson and Nora Soza.
Senior forwards Midori Uehara and Rachel Mozenter, who each had a goal and assist in the contest, combined on the game's first goal seven minutes into the game.
Uehara was in good position in the circle and converted Mozenter's picture perfect feed into a goal.
Stanford turned up the pressure in the second half, scoring four unanswered goals for the margin of victory. Travlos scored the first two goals of the half within 90 seconds of each other in the first 10 minutes. She converted a penalty stroke and then took Uehara's quick pass across the goal and knocked it into the cage.
Freshman midfielder Katie Mitchell finished the scoring with a goal in the final two minutes of play. Freshman forward Devon Holman provided the assist from the top of the circle.
