'Sandbag Saturday' needs more volunteers
Annual Palo Alto effort to deliver and help fill sandbags anticipates the upcoming rainy season
|
Palo Alto emergency services officials need some help Saturday: community volunteers willing to deliver and fill sandbags as part of Palo Alto's annual "Sandbag Saturday."
The Fire Department's Office of Emergency Services distributes sandbags each fall as the rainy season approaches -- and the dark clouds along the Skyline Ridge are reminders.
Residents may also pick up sandbags to keep handy in case of a significant storm in coming weeks or months, according Emergency Services Coordinator Barbara Cimino.
The sandbag event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Municipal Services Center, 3201 East Bayshore Rd. Volunteers for the two-hour shifts are needed for the noon to 2 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. shifts, Cimino said.
Volunteers will help make sandbags with the city's sandbag machine, assisted by Public Works Department staff members. The filled sandbags will be placed at Mitchell Park sandbag sites when big storms are predicted.
Residents are invited to pick up sandbags Saturday from the Municipal Service Center. Persons who need assistance loading or unloaded sandbags will be paired with volunteers for assistance.

A special request came in from Barbara Cimino, Palo Alto Fire Department, Office of Emergency Services. They are in need of more volunteers to help this Saturday with the annual Sandbag event scheduled for November 7th. The event will take place from 10am to 4pm. The link to register to volunteer is http://2009sandbagsaturday.eventbrite.com
They need people to volunteer for 2-hour shifts to make sandbags or help deliver sandbags. Shifts still need help: Noon to 2pm, and 2pm to 4pm.
They will be making sandbags with the sandbag machine and the help of Public Works personnel. These sandbags will be placed at the Mitchell Park sandbag sites when high storm events are predicted. Additionally, the community is invited to pick up sandbags that day from the Municipal Service Center . Those individuals, who may need assistance loading and unloading sandbags, will be paired up with a volunteer willing to assist.
You do not need to be a PANDA to volunteer. Please share this information with the community.
Please share the information with others who may have time to spare this Saturday to help!
Thank you,
Susie
