Smith, Noll combine for eight goals in Stanford men's water polo win over UC Santa Barbara
Third-ranked Cardinal remains unbeaten in MPSF play

Share
Jacob Smith scored five goals as the third-ranked Stanford men's water polo team defeated visiting UC Santa Barbara, 13-8, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest Saturday.

Travis Noll added three goals as the Cardinal (4-0, 16-1) remained unbeaten in conference play heading into Wednesday's 7 p.m. nonconference affair with visiting UC Davis.

The Gauchos, coached by former Stanford All-American and Olympian Wolf Wigo, took a 2-1 lead midway through the first period before Sacred Heart Prep grad Paul Rudolph scored, on an assist from Ryan Kent, with 34 seconds left in the period to tie it.

That sparked a five-goal outburst for the Cardinal, which scored eight times in the second quarter to assume control of the contest. Stanford scored on each of its first three possessions of the second period with Drac Wigo, Noll and Alex Pulido, who scored twice in the game, each contributed a goal. Jeffrey Schwimer scored to make it 7-2.

Menlo School grad Jimmie Sandman recorded 10 saves in the net for Stanford and former Knights' goalie Scott Platshon added a save in the final minutes.
