No bail for Palo Alto murder suspect Zumot
Bulos 'Paul' Zumot makes first court appearance for his arraignment

Murder suspect Bulos "Paul" Zumot was denied bail during his arraignment Friday afternoon in Santa Clara County Superior Court at the Palo Alto Courthouse.

Zumot, 36, is charged with two felony counts of murder and arson in the death of 29-year-old Jennifer Schipsi.

Unshaven, shackled and clad in a red jumpsuit, Zumot conferred with his attorneys throughout the arraignment but did not look toward his family members, who showed up to support him.

Zumot is not eligible for bail because of a probation hold. He was already on probation for an earlier misdemeanor and his probation officer put him on hold after this arrest, defense attorney Cameron Bowman said.

Police arrested Zumot Monday night. Palo Alto police spokesman Sgt. Dan Ryan said police believe Zumot killed Schipsi in an "act of passion" and then burned their cottage at 969 Addison Ave. to hide his crime.

Owner of Da Hookah Spot in downtown Palo Alto, Zumot had a turbulent, on-and-off relationship with Schipsi since the pair started dating in October 2007. Schipsi had previously filed restraining orders against Zumot, saying his actions made her afraid for her safety.

Bowman said his investigators are working on many aspects of the case.

"We've already uncovered a lot of interesting evidence," Bowman said. "In the coming weeks, we think a different view of the case is going to come out."

Zumot is scheduled to make a general appearance in court on Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Palo Alto Courthouse.

My earlier, erased comment was an expansion on "dial 911 and die".

Defense attorneys. Cup half full types. Hope the truth comes out, whatever it is.

A different view of this case is going to come out? I do understand, until proven guilty. But I can't help but think it seems pretty telling that he did not look towards his family members? If I was innocent of a crime I would be shouting out that I didn't do it! Shades of OJ.

It could be humiliating and embarrasing for him to be wearing the red jumpsuit. This maybe the reason for him not looking at his family. Does not mean he is guilty. My heart goes out to his mother who's heart must be torn seeing her son in court and not knowing if she can trust him and believe him

I have a Big Feeling inside Me Telling Me He's innocent.. Ive been to the hookah spot a couple times and he seems harmless. but then u never know.. i would be ashamed to look at my family too if i was him... even if i was innocent and everyone knew i was.. bein in a redjump suit accused of arsenal and murder and facing LIFE in prison isnt something to be proud of..

prays and thoughts go out of jennifers family and ESPECIALLY HI

This guy deserves the death sentence. It would be unfair to the tax payers to support him in jail for another X amount of years! I mean, what for, didnt we already know that CA needs $ funds for other MORE meaningful purposes that support a lowly, abusive murderer and others like him? I suggest we vote for an immediate death sentence for this scumbag.

Redferrari, people can have two sides to them. Some who seem harmless can also be wife beaters.

If the evidence in the media is accurate, he has guilty plastered all over him. Some time in hard prison, and he will wish for the death penalty.
