H1N1 vaccine arrives at county health dept.
Nasal-spray form of vaccine will be given to medical providers first

Share
The first shipment of H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine -- 14,000 doses -- have arrived in Santa Clara County, health officials reported Tuesday.

The vaccine will be given to private and public medical providers in the county first, as well as to staff at the Santa Clara County Public Health Department. It is in nasal-spray form; a vaccination shot will be available later, according to the health department.

More than 200,000 doses of vaccine, in both the nasal and shot forms, are expected to be available in Santa Clara County by the end of the month, officials stated in a press release.

As of Sept. 30, nine people have died and 159 people have been hospitalized in the county due to H1N1, including 74 hospitalizations in the past month, according to the county.

The initial shipment is the beginning of a long vaccination effort, county officials said, adding that there will be enough vaccine for everyone who wants it.

"We appreciate the public's patience as we undertake this effort," Dr. Marty Fenstersheib, county health officer, stated in the press release. "This vaccination is the best protection against H1N1, which continues to make many people sick and has been related to nine deaths in our county."

Only healthy people between the ages of 2 and 49 are allowed to receive the nasal-spray form of the vaccine, as it contains the live virus. Children between the ages of 2 and 10 should receive it first, based on advice of The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and the California Health Department.

The nasal vaccine should not be given to:
• Children younger than 2 years of age
• Adults 50 years and older
• People with a medical condition that places them at high risk for complications from influenza and people with illnesses that weaken their immune system
• Children younger than 5 with a history of recurrent wheezing
• Children or adolescents receiving aspirin
• People with a history of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare disorder of the nervous system
• Pregnant women
• People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs or who are allergic to any of the nasal-spray vaccine components.

Based on the recommendations from the CDC, once the demand for vaccine for people at highest risk for illness or complications has been met, the public-health department and local providers can begin providing the vaccine to all others who want it.

Anyone thinking about getting this vaccine must read this article first.

If the flu vaccine is given to 50,000 people a day, one of them at least will have a heart attack, get the flu, get Guillian Barre, drive their car into a wall, suffer from potato famine, etc. All of it will be blamed on the vaccine.

OH MY GAWD....go to the above link by Guxxclimber...

it basically rehashes concerns piled atop fears, sitting on top of paranoia....then there is this which closes the deal..

"The nasal spray is being rolled out on a mass scale before the widespread introduction of the injectable vaccine. Some fear that the nasal spray will contribute to a wider pandemic, which will then provide governments with the crisis they need to make the injectable vaccine mandatory.

“This would accelerate the move to a state of emergency, cripple the US health care system, and would result in the “need” to have military, eventually UN troops, take control,” notes TheFluCase.com.

“Also, all public assemblies, including courts, would be prohibited, thereby satisfying a condition for the imposition of martial law, mass quarantines, and forced vaccinations for the rest of us.”

And Commander in Chief Obama will then enter all your living rooms backed up by legions of Kmer Rouge troops and steal all the large screen plasma sets.

I can't believe how the opposition to Obama is now being channeled into "the Feds" paranoia about everything. Why don't we just advocate erecting a big statue of Timothy McVeigh in place of the Statue of Liberty?

I just logged on to this news story thinking to see some relevant and perhaps rationale discussion. But this whipped up paranoia is spreading to every facet of our social lives now. It's like Astroturf Pod People have sprouted among us.

A Noun, funny posts. True, people are paranoid. A physician neighbor of mine said that she tells patients they can walk down the hall for the influenza shot for free and not even wait in line and many patients still refuse.

We vaccinate every year. Becoming ill is such a huge waste of time.

Gunxclimber, the article you linked cited a MayoClinic page which actually states that "only 10 out of every one million people who received the vaccine actually developed GBS" AND "It is assumed that the “swine flu” virus included in the 1976 vaccine caused the problem, but this has not been proven." It hasn't been proven. And the panic then started after 3 elderly people got the vaccination - no one over 50 is approved to receive the vaccination this year. Do your research before you start fear mongering please.
