■ Music: Daniel Pearl World Music Days Concert
Since the 2002 kidnapping and slaying of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, hundreds of concerts around the world have been given in his honor. Tonight (Oct. 8) at 8 p.m., Stanford Lively Arts presents one of these events at Memorial Auditorium featuring the St. Lawrence String Quartet, other Stanford faculty, and the Talisman a cappella ensemble. ■ Food talk: 'Redefining Soul Food'
Bryant Terry, an eco-chef, food-justice activist and author of "Vegan Soul Kitchen (VSK): Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African-American Cuisine," will give a free talk tonight (Oct. 8) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Stanford University's Annenberg Auditorium, 435 Lasuen Mall. His projects include the Food and Society Policy Fellows Program and "The Endless Feast," a public-television series on sustainable eating. His Stanford talk will be called "Redefining Soul Food: Politics and Pleasures of Food and Eating in the Black Communities," co-sponsored by Stanford's Center for African-American studies. ■ Lecture: Sunset Magazine and its Influence on Local Architecture
Montgomery Anderson, AIA and Christopher Wasney, Principals, Cody Anderson Wasney Architects, will speak on Sunset Magazine and its influence on local architecture tonight (Oct. 8) at 7 p.m. at the Museum of American Heritage, 351 Homer Ave., Palo Alto.
