| Thousands of eager runners and walkers spent Friday evening at Palo Alto's Baylands Athletic Center for the 25th annual Moonlight Run and Walk. Palo Alto Weekly Promotions Director Amy Renalds, the race's co-director, said the event drew a record number of participants, many with children and dogs in tow.
"It was one of the most beautiful nights and energetic, enthusiastic crowds we have ever seen," Renalds said. "(There were) lots of families, running clubs, school groups and high school cross country teams. Even one of our new sponsor's, Wahoo's, had the owner flown in from Southern Cal for the event and he was blown away by the turnout and community spirit."
Official results are posted at changeofpace.com and those who placed first, second or third should go to the Palo Alto Weekly office at 450 Cambridge Ave. in Palo Alto between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday to pick up their medals.
Old running shoes were collected at the event and will be donated to war-torn countries and orphanages. Event sponsors included the Palo Alto Weekly, City of Palo Alto Recreation, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Larry's AutoWorks, Connoisseur Coffee Co., Whole Foods Market, Wahoo's Fish Taco and others.

Posted by Amy, a resident of the Old Palo Alto neighborhood, on Oct 6, 2009 at 9:42 am Thank you to ALL the sponsors of this event and to ALL of the volunteers that made this one of the best events ever! The proceeds of the 25th Annual Moonlight Run & Walk will serve as "seed money" for the upcoming Palo Alto Weekly Holiday Fund drive (launched in November). We are so proud to be able to put on a community event like the Moonlight Run, that in turn provides support for the remarkable non profits in our community.

Posted by musical, a resident of the Palo Verde neighborhood, on Oct 6, 2009 at 8:50 pm Since the Baylands are closed sunset to 8am (Municipal Code 22.04.315), I'll assume that the organizers obtained a special permit. It's a shame there are so many miscreants around here that the city needs to prohibit the use of our open space after sundown. It would be nice to take a peaceful moonlight stroll somewhere away from all the artificial lighting, and to hear some of those forgotten sounds of nighttime nature.

Posted by Amy, a resident of the Old Palo Alto neighborhood, on Oct 7, 2009 at 9:16 am The Palo Alto Weekly co-sponsor this annual event with the City of Palo Alto Recreation and they do in fact, obtain a special permit every year for the walk and run along the levee's under the full moon. It makes for a very special evening.
