Caltrain fatality in San Mateo slows/stops trains
Train paused in Palo Alto this evening believed linked to San Mateo fatality
|
A pedestrian was fatally struck by a Caltrain in San Mateo this afternoon, causing delays in train schedules, a Caltrain spokeswoman said. It is believed to be accidental.
A train stopped for a time in northern Palo Alto this evening is believed connected to the San Mateo delays.
Witnesses reported that the man was carrying two parrots and that two trains were approaching the area where he was crossing, and he appeared confused and froze when caught by surprise by the second train.
Northbound train No. 261 struck the pedestrian on the tracks at East Bellevue Avenue at about 4:40 p.m., according to Caltrain spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew.
Trains were being single-tracked through the area at 10 mph at 5:40 p.m. and Bartholomew said commuters should expect delays of at least 30 minutes.
The crash marks the 12th Caltrain-involved fatality this year. — Bay City News Service

Posted by Bucky, a resident of the Downtown North neighborhood, on Sep 21, 2009 at 9:14 pm Why do you almost never hear about fatalities on BART? Because there are no at-grade road crossings. HSR will have the same design, so it will be a lot safer than Caltrain.

Do you really think that if people can't throw themselves in front of a train they won't try and end their life another way? And another thing, even if HSR is built on the Caltrain tracks the SP freight trains will still need to run on separate tracks either next to or under the HSR tracks. It is my understanding that there will be three different trains that will run down the Peninsula if HSR is built: Caltrain, Southern Pacific freight trains, and HSR. We do need grade separation even if HSR is not built.
