Gastroenteritis closes parts of Hyatt Classic
Residents told pool, gym, other facilities may reopen Monday

Share
Classic Residence by Hyatt, the upscale retirement community along Sand Hill Road in Palo Alto, has closed its dining room, pool, gym, library and other community facilities in response to an outbreak of gastroenteritis, Steve Brudnick, executive director, said.

The closures occurred Saturday, and managers told residents Thursday that they hope to re-open the facilities by Monday, June 29. Brudnick said they would re-open 72 hours after the last patient showed no symptoms, adding that no new cases were reported on Friday.

Meanwhile, residents said they can order their meals from the dining room and have them delivered, prepare food in their own apartments or go out to eat. Activities such as exercise classes and lectures also have been canceled.

The second floors of the Hyatt's D and F wings were closed and residents were asked to stay in their apartments, Brudnick said.

Residents on the first, third and fourth floors were free to come and go as they please. However, they are discouraged from gathering in groups until the gastroenteritis outbreak is over, he said.

Santa Clara County Public Health Department spokeswoman Joy Alexiou said the Hyatt is following county procedures to contain any outbreak and is not under any official public health quarantine.

Brudnick the first residents became ill Thursday June 18. "It escalated a little bit and that is when we put our measures in place to make sure we keep residents safe by closing all our congregant facilities," he said.

Public health officials were notified and "then we just went in to disinfect the whole place and check on residents every couple of hours and took extreme measures to make sure they were OK.

"We're down to just a handful of residents who are finishing up their 72 hours of having no symptoms," he said.
