One day after The King's Academy (Sunnyvale) junior running back Amir Carlisle committed to the Stanford football team as the earliest recruit in school history, St. Joseph's Prep sophomore quarterback-free safety Skyler Mornhinweg gave the Cardinal his verbal commitment Wednesday as a member of the Class of 2012.

Mornhinweg is familiar with both football and the Bay Area. His father, Marty Mornhinweg, served as the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator between 1997-2000, Skyler's formative years.

"I grew up in California and Stanford was always one of the places that I wanted to go to school," Mornhinweg told scout.com. I have great respect for Coach Jim Harbaugh and I've known the Harbaugh's for a long time. It made my decision pretty easy."

Stanford has received verbal commitments from 17 high school seniors for the class of 2010, and with Carlisle and Mornhinweg, they have 19 overall.

While Mornhinweg (6-3, 190) has yet to play a down of football in high school, he did spend his freshman year as a free safety and led his league in interceptions.

"My dad has helped me a lot at quarterback, for which I'm thankful," Mornhinweg said. "If I don't play quarterback this season I would imagine I'll be back at safety this year."
