Stanford gets a verbal from running back
Wilkerson becomes 16th prep football junior to commit to Cardinal

Bookmark and Share
Tustin High running back Anthony Wilkerson verbally committed to Stanford football on Sunday night according to scout.com.

"It just felt like the right fit for me," Wilkerson told scout.com. "Me and my parents were talking about it and it just seems like the right place for me."

Wilkerson, ranked 37th at his position, rushed for 2,300 yards and 35 touchdowns as a junior for the Tillers last fall.

"I think I've got a nice stiff arm. I'm really hard to tackle," Wilkerson said. "I think I'm violent on the field because I'm not going try to juke you. If I've got the ball and you're in my way I'll run over you."

Wilkerson becomes the 16th high school junior (eight on offense, eight on defense) to commit to Stanford for the fall of 2010, and the first running back, one of the Cardinal's top priorities. Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh indicated at the end of last season that it was critical to get a running back in this recruiting class.

Wilkerson also considered offers from Washington, Colorado, UCLA and Utah.

Stanford junior outfielder Alissa Haber, freshman shortstop Ashley Hansen and Cardinal grad Lauren Lappin are among the 41 players who were chosen to participate at the USA Softball Women's National Team Selection Camp, which begins Monday, at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.

Haber earned a spot on the ESPN.com All-American team, one of 12 players selected on Monday.

For the third year in a row, Haber led Stanford in nearly every offensive category - batting average (.443), hits (89), doubles (26), runs (61), slugging percentage (.721) and on-base percentage (.507).

The nation's doubles leader, Haber shattered the previous school record with 26 doubles on the year. Her career-best batting average was among the top 15 nationally and marked the second-best single-season mark in school history.

The selection camp is designed to pick two teams that will compete in four events this summer, including the KFC World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City.

The two rosters -- the USA Softball Women's National Team and the USA Softball Women's Elite Team -- will be announced next Monday.

The USA Softball Women's National team will represent the U.S. at the Canada Cup (July 4-12) and the World Cup (July 16-20).

The rosters for the Japan Cup (July 31- Aug. 2) and the Pan American Qualifier (July 31- Aug. 9) will be a combination of athletes from the Women's National team and the Elite team.
