Noisy Caltrain rail-grinding to reduce train noise
Project will reach Midpeninsula communities in late March and early April
|
Caltrain next week with launch a noisy, middle-of-the-night rail-grinding project that ultimately will reduce train noise.
The dramatic, spark-spewing grinding will occur between 10 p.m. and 4:30 a.m.
Officials said the project will begin March 18 in Redwood City then move north, reaching San Francisco by about March 23. It will then return south to San Jose and back to Redwood City by April 13 meaning impacts on Midpeninsula communities won't hit until late March or early April.
During the grinding, nearby residents can expect a noise level that compares to shop tools or someone shouting, but will not be as loud as a train whistle or gas-powered lawn mower, agency spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew said. Each neighborhood will be impacted for just one or two nights, she said.
The project will ultimately result in reduced noise for neighbors to the train tracks and a safer, smoother ride for passengers, Bartholomew said.
A rail-mounted, industrial-sized grinder will smooth out defects and restore the shape of the rails, Bartholomew said.

Posted by Big Al, a resident of Another Palo Alto neighborhood, on Mar 12, 2009 at 9:24 pm Your right sarah, it's no big deal....
just a little grinding of metal in the middle of the night-
might I suggest you come on over to my house on Park Blvd.
and set up at tent for the occasion. There is plenty of room
for you, but I not your significant other. If we can't get any sleep,
perhaps we could find something else to do to spend the time.
What do you think? Either way, sparks are sure to be flying.

Posted by Disgusted, a resident of the Old Palo Alto neighborhood, on Mar 13, 2009 at 11:16 pm Oh bull. I've lived by the tracks for 20 years and finally moved a bit farther away only to be awakened in the middle of the night last month by a loud horrible grinding noise...same noise I heard periodically for 20 years. Work on the tracks, AGAIN! It's loud, intrusive and aggravating. Do the work on weekend days and let people get their sleep!
