A memorial service and a funeral for Rollan Kim, 46, of Palo Alto will take place on Thursday and Friday of this week. Kim, a former Yahoo! executive, was killed Sunday in a paragliding accident.
Kim's memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at New Community Baptist Church, 1250 West Middlefield Road, Mountain View.
The funeral is scheduled for Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Alta Mesa Cemetery, 695 Arastradero Road, Palo Alto.
Friends and family have been memorializing Kim on a Facebook group, "The Life and Memory of Rollan Kim."
Kim was found by a fisherman in the ocean near Mussel Rock near Pacifica at around 10 a.m. Sunday morning, according to a National Park Service dispatcher.
A cause of death has not been determined yet.
Kim's profile on LinkedIn.com listed him as the director of business development at Yahoo! since 2007. Prior to that he worked at Intuit, CCK Consulting & Investments, Borland Software and two investment banks, BT Alex Brown/Deutsche Bank and Citigroup Salomon Smith Barney.
According to the blog of friend Jeff Widman, Kim had recently gotten a job at The Conversation Group.
Kim had an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley and a bachelor's degree from Harvard University, where he graduated with honors.
Friends memorialized Kim online, sharing memories of a man they said was fiercely devoted to his children and to God, had a silly sense of humor and enjoyed living life.
"We are all in shock and truly devastated," his ex-wife, Marie Jihn, wrote in a Facebook posting. "The children loved him very much and will miss him dearly."
A college classmate who kept in touch with Kim recalled the times he would perform stand-up comedy on open-mike nights.
"Rollan was always hamming it up and making faces ... how he loved to make people laugh," she wrote on Facebook.
Another college friend remembered Kim's adventurous spirit.
"I recall a story when you had been travelling in Germany and managed to land a job on a ski slope, not knowing a word of German nor how to ski. Trying to pretend like you understood instructions, you sent up a grease can up the slope tied to the ski lift when they in fact wanted you to shut the lift down. Nothing beats trying to go with the flow," he wrote.
Another friend wrote about Kim's love for his three children, Cairo, Cooper and Kylie.
"He always was there for the kids cheering them on at their sporting events, and beaming during their piano recitals. In fact, he seemed always to be there for them in everything they did. How lucky the kids have been to have him at their side so often! The enthusiasm Rollan brought to the moment in whatever his adventure was contagious," she wrote.
According to a 2002 article in O, the Oprah Magazine, he and Jhin got married after being part of an adventure tour to Egypt in 1991. — Palo Alto Weekly staff
