Bicyclist shot, wounded in East Palo Alto
Gunshot wounds were non-fatal

Bookmark and Share
A 39-year-old man shot multiple times while riding his bicycle in East Palo Alto early Friday morning is expected to survive, police said.

Officers were alerted to five gunshots via the city's Shotspotter System in the 2400 block of Illinois Street around 12:30 a.m., police said.

Upon arrival, the officers did not find a victim but noticed a parked vehicle had been struck with bullets and spent shell casings were found nearby, according to police.

Around 2:20 a.m., the Police Department was notified that a gunshot victim had arrived at a local hospital.

Officers responded to the emergency room and learned the victim, a Hayward resident, had been shot in that area around the same time as the Shotspotter System activated, police said.

The victim said he had been riding his bicycle when a vehicle passed him, then turned around and stopped.

A suspect then exited the vehicle and ran toward the victim, and the victim tried to pedal away, police said.

When the victim arrived at a safe location, he realized he had been shot and arranged for transportation to the hospital, according to police.

He was listed in stable condition today (Sunday), police said.

I'm really sorry to see this. While commenting to myself: "Self, don't bike in EPA", I'm also feeling bad for people who finds it necessary to do so.

I want to help them, but I'm also lazy and skeptical. Oh well.

I ride my bike all the time from Palo Alto through East Palo and across the Dumbarton Bridge. I've never had a problem. I don't ride my bike after midnight, though.

I am glad the victim is doing OK.

I live in East Palo Alto and I wouldn't ride my bike there or any where else for that matter at 12:30 am!!!!!
