Menlo football player arrested for assault
|
A football player at Menlo College has been arrested in connection with a potentially deadly assault on another Menlo College student. The incident took place at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue and Garwood Avenue in Menlo Park early on the morning of Thursday, Jan. 29, Menlo Park police reported.
Benjamin Kain-Williams of Atherton, the Menlo College football player, and Darrell Willis of Wheatland, California, were arrested and charged with assault resulting in great bodily injury, and conspiracy to commit a crime, police said.
One of the two victims was taken to Stanford Hospital with what police described as potentially life-threatening injuries. Menlo College has identified that man as a student there.
The Menlo College website lists Kain-Williams as a sophomore linebacker on the football team.
"We are a small and very close community of students, faculty and staff at Menlo College, and we are deeply upset by this incident," said Timothy Haight, the college's president, in a press release. "Menlo College will continue to stress the importance of responsible behavior, not just among our students, but to local establishments who serve or sell alcohol to college students in their communities."
The two men who were assaulted were part of a larger group that had exchanged words at a restaurant with another group of men earlier that night, according to preliminary investigations by police.
"The libations were flowing, and so was the testosterone," said Detective Jeffrey Vasquez. "They had some words, and that was that."
The group that included the men who were assaulted left the restaurant to get "soda and chips for the road" at a "nearby establishment," Detective Vasquez said. It appears that the other group followed them there, meeting them in a parking lot, he said.
The groups dispersed and met up again further down the street, where the dispute escalated into a physical confrontation, according to Vasquez.
Vasquez said it is still possible that the police department will press charges against some of the other people involved in the fight, including the man who is currently in the hospital. Vasquez visited the hospital and spoke with the man on the afternoon of Jan. 29. As of the afternoon of Friday, Jan. 30, he said he would still describe that man's injuries as potentially life-threatening.
The police department asks those with information on the incident to call the department at 650-330-6300, or the department's anonymous tip line at 650-330-6395.Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.

It's not the schools fault these losers did what they did. People have free will, can't watch 'em 24/7. What is the update on the victim?

I am wondering how old these attackers are, and were they drinking at the BBC? There is a serious problem in Palo Alto at least, with underage drinking. I can name four establishments off the top of my head where I KNOW some kids under 20 have been stinking drunk recently. I have seen more than one of their bogus id's...one said the girl is 5'4 when she is 5'10. Guess bouncers can't read, or see past past a well built cute girl. One place is on University. Three on Ramona. Add to that: Two on El Camino is Menlo Park. One on University Avenue in Los Gatos. I called the ABC and tried to report my first hand knowledge, they make the reporting process a pain in the butt. THOSE PLACES? YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. UPGRADE YOUR FRONT DOOR SECURITY AND ID READING CAPABILITIES.

I too have seen kids from their graduation classes frequenting the downtown clubs. They should be easy enougj to spot...the ones with not enough sense to keep a low profile!

Posted by WOW, a resident of Menlo Park, on Feb 1, 2009 at 1:24 am First off, people posting are criticizing about reading skills, when apparently their typing skills and spelling ability are horrible. The only way things will change around here is if the police start taking action against these establishments, instead of issuing parking tickets and waiting on the hood of their cars to issue minor traffic sign violations. The police sit outside of theses "bars" or "restaurants" and sit on their hands waiting for something drastic, like this incident, to happen instead of being proactive. Hmmmmmmmm and what do you expect the college or anyone to say about this right now? It would violate peoples rights of confidentiality, plus its called respect. Tim Haight is a class act, as is Menlo College.

Posted by Football teaches violence, a resident of the Southgate neighborhood, on Feb 2, 2009 at 1:21 am Football is a violent, ugly sport. Yes, I know today was SuperBowl day and millions of mostly men like it. It glorifies brute force, grabbing territory and disabling the opponent.
So what is the surprise if the players are violent off the field as well. They live in a world where strength and aggression wins. Not what I would choose to train a boy for. The players look like hulking unattractive creatures.

I read this article twice and still can't figure out who did what to whom...other than two students arrested for assault, one a football player. At which establishment did this occur? Who started the fiasco? What are the ages of those involved? Honestly, this is poorly written.
