Postal clerk to retire after 56 years of service

Share
Austin Barber, 80, will sort his last piece of mail on Friday, Jan. 2 at the main Palo Alto Post Office on East Bayshore Road. Barber has worked for the post office for 56 years and 6 months.

"He has been the hardest working, most enjoyable employee I have ever had the opportunity to work with," Palo Alto Postmaster John Kelly said.

Barber began his postal career on July 3, 1952, at the age of 24. But he actually started postal work as a casual employee when he was 17 and Harry S. Truman was the president. The U.S. Postal Service was then the U.S. Post Office, a change that didn't occur until 1971.

Barber will receive a proclamation from Mayor Larry Klein on his last day of work on Friday.

You are to be commended for your service to your community and the USPS for such a long period of time. The USPS is like a family and you truly have given to your family. Have a blessed retirement!

I am very appreciative of all at the USPS. Some of the mail we received recently was badly addressed, either by the writing or spellings, but it still arrived. The sorters do a great job because they use their brains and their experience. It is the machines that can't think that tends to make the mistakes.

I hope that in this mechanized age of sorting, there will still be a few human beings around that know how to use their brains when seeing a badly addressed piece of mail.
