The Stanford men’s golf program announced Wednesday that its annual spring tournament, formally known as the United States Intercollegiate, will be renamed ‘The Goodwin’ in honor of former head coach Wally Goodwin.
The tournament gets under way Friday at the Stanford Golf Course and concludes Sunday. The tournament is open to the public.
The 18-team field is comprised of host Stanford, UAB, Northwestern, Colorado State, San Jose State, Fresno State, Washington, TCU, Oregon, UC Davis, USC, St. Mary’s, UCLA, USF, Washington State, San Diego State, UNLV and Loyola Marymount.
Goodwin coached at Stanford from 1983-2000, highlighted by winning the 1994 national title. Goodwin was named national coach of the year in 1992 and 1994.
“Coach Goodwin put Stanford golf back on the map, and we’re happy to name this event in his honor on the 20th anniversary of the 1994 national championship,” said Conrad Ray, Stanford’s head coach. “Wally has done so much for the program, and brought many great golfers to Stanford. We wanted to find a fun and unique way to recognize him in perpetuity, and being that this is our only regular-season home event, it’s a fitting tribute to his legacy.”
Goodwin recruited and coached standouts such as Tiger Woods, Casey Martin, Notah Begay, Joel Kribel and Ray, among many other stars from Stanford’s golfing tradition.
Goodwin came to The Farm in 1983, turning the program in a national powerhouse.
In 1994, the year before Woods came to Stanford, Goodwin led the Cardinal to the NCAA title, defeating Texas on its home course to claim the program’s first championship since 1953.
Stanford finished second in 1995 after losing a playoff with Oklahoma State, and Woods went on to win the 1996 individual championship before going pro one season later.
Goodwin retired from Stanford in 2000. He served as the head coach for Northern Colorado from 2003-07.
This weekend, Stanford will defend its team title. The Cardinal has 13 team victories and 13 individual titles at the event, the most of any program in each category. The Cardinal captured the first team and individual titles in 1968 during the inaugural year of the tournament.
Women’s golf
Stanford tied for second at the San Diego State Farms Invitational, shooting a 1-over 289 Wednesday to finish the event at even-par with No. 2 UCLA. The teams went head-to-head with top-ranked USC, which won the tournament after shooting a final-round 6-under to notch a 3-under for the tournament.
The three teams were grouped together in the final round, setting the stage for quite a showcase of college golf’s finest women’s performers to conclude the three-day, 54-hole event at The Farms Golf Club.
“I was very pleased with our play this week,” said Stanford coach Anne Walker. “To compete with the top two teams in the country right down to the wire was a great experience and a huge confidence booster for our team. We will take away a ton of positives from this event.”
Stanford’s 864 (290-285-289) was three shots behind USC, and 17 shots better than fourth-place Arizona State among the 17-team field.
Lauren Kim (-2) and Casey Danielson (-1) finished their third round in the red for the Cardinal, with Mariah Stackhouse checking in with a 2-over 74. Kim was 6-under for the tournament to finish second, and Danielson was 5-under for third. Stackhouse made Stanford the only team with a trio of players in the top-10, signing in at fifth with a 1-over 217.
Mariko Tumangan took 12 shots off her second-round score with a 74 to finish at 23-over and a 70th-place nod. Marissa Mar was 63rd at 20-over.
