Palo Alto High grad Davante Adams of Fresno State has been named the Mountain West Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this football season.
In Fresno State’s 38-14 win over visiting UNLV on Saturday Adams tied the school record with four touchdown catches and also equaled the conference single-game record as he helped propel the ‘Dogs past the Rebels.
Adams also had a fifth TD reception nullified by a pass interference call.
“The official called it, so I guess I did,” Adams said. “I don’t know if I agree with the call, but that is what refs are for. I would’ve liked to have had the record. But in the end, I would much rather get a victory and come out and see my team happy and singing in the locker room, than getting the record.”
Adams, a redshirt sophomore, now shares the record with BYU’s Luke Ashworth (Nov. 13, 2010 at Colorado State) and Utah’s Travis LaTendresse (Dec. 29, 2005 vs. Georgia Tech).
Adams caught eight passes in the game for a career-high 221 yards and became the first Bulldog to surpass the 200-yard mark since Rodney Wright did so in 2001. The 221 receiving yards are the most by a Mountain West player since San Diego State’s DeMarco Sampson recorded 257 yards at Colorado State on Oct. 24, 2009.
The fact UNLV played one-on-one coverage on Adams certainly helped the Bulldogs.
“If they are going to continue to put people on me or cover one-on-one, I am just going to keep doing what I do,” Adams said.
Adams and the Bulldogs got off to a fast start Saturday night as Derek Carr connected with Adams on a 75-yard TD pass on the first play from scrimmage, the longest play from scrimmage this season for the ‘Dogs.
Adams wound up with three touchdowns on four receptions for 146 yards in the first half which made back-to-back games the sophomore receiver would open a first half with three TD receptions.
With now 25 career touchdown catches in only 19 career games, Adams tied the school record for career touchdown receptions that he now shares with Bernard Berrian (1999-03), Charlie Jones (1992-95) and Henry Ellard (1979-82).
Adams will look to break the all-time career TD mark this Saturday when Fresno State (6-0, 3-0 MW), ranked No. 17 in the first BCS Standings this week, travels to San Diego State (3-3, 2-0 MW). Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT on ESPN2.
