Hope Burke recorded her second multi-goal game of the year and No. 13 Stanford blanked visiting UC Davis, 5-0, Friday night in a NorPac Conference contest.
Courtney Haldeman, Clemence Couteau and Alex McCawley also scored for the Cardinal (9-3, 1-1 NorPac), which had a 23-2 edge in shots and 8-0 advantage in penalty corners. It also avenged a loss to the Aggies less than a week ago.
Dulcie Davies was credited with her fifth shutout of the year, thanks to a strong effort from the Cardinal defense.
Haldeman opened the game’s scoring just 1:10 into the match, redirecting a strong feed from McCawley to the right corner of the cage.
Burke scored her first goal just before halftime. Maddie Secco made a couple of nice moves on the left side of the cage to evade defenders and deliver the assist.
Couteau opened the scoring in the second half, tapping in a rebound directly in front of the cage off a shot by McCawley.
Burke followed with her second of the night and team-leading seventh goal of the season less than 10 minutes later when she redirected a strong pass from Elise Ogle to the top right corner of the cage.
McCawley added the fifth Stanford goal in the 69th minute with a highlight-reel shot. Positioned just inside the circle on the right side, McCawley ripped a shot to the top left corner of the cage.
The Cardinal will look to carry its momentum into Sunday as it hosts Yale at noon.
Women’s volleyball
Madi Bugg recorded 37 assists and eighth-ranked Stanford beat visiting Utah, 25-17, 25-18, 25-18, Friday, in a Pac-12 Conference contest.
Kyle Gilbert accumulated a match-high 19 digs for the Cardinal (4-1 in the Pac-12, 11-3 overall), which hosts Colorado on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Stanford hit .327 as a team, while holding Utah to a .149 clip. The Cardinal also posted eight blocks in the match to just five by the Utes. With the win, Stanford improved to 7-1 all-time against Utah, including a 4-0 mark in Pac-12 play.
Senior middle blocker Carly Wopat led the team with 10 kills on 17 attempts with just one error to hit .529 in the match. Wopat also registered five blocks and two digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Burgess finished with nine kills and 12 digs, while sophomore Brittany Howard added nine kills, six digs and four blocks.
