Part of Arastradero Road in Palo Alto was closed Friday, Feb. 28, as police and fire officials investigated a hazardous-materials situation at an apartment complex at 724 Arastradero Road.
The Arastradero West complex was evacuated as a precautionary measure, but police allowed residents to return to their homes at about 5:15 p.m. No other residences were affected, police said.
Police tweeted at 5:10 p.m. that the situation stabilized and that officers were conducting a suicide investigation inside an apartment. It appears that someone may have used commercially available gas to die by suicide, they said.
Arastradero Road was temporarily closed between Terman Middle School and Gunn High School. As of 5:15 p.m., police reopened eastbound lanes. There was no danger at either school, both of which were out for the day.
Police tweeted at about 5:30 p.m. that one westbound lane on Arastradero had re-opened.
