Gunn girls, SHP and Pinewood boys earn No. 1 seeds for CCS

Three basketball teams received No. 1 seeds and two others earned free passes to the CIF Northern California playoffs following Sunday's Central Coast Section seeding meeting.

Taking No. 1 seeds into the postseason will be the Gunn girls, Sacred Heart Prep boys and Pinewood boys, while the Eastside Prep and Pinewood girls received berths in the CCS Open Division, which qualified them for the NorCal playoffs.

The No. 1 seed by Gunn is perhaps one of the biggest surprises for a number of reasons. The Titans, under first-year coach Melanie Murphy, played only 15 games and went just 8-7 -- finishing 7-5 in the SCVAL De Anza Division.

Gunn, however, closed its season with a big 53-50 upset of previously unbeaten Wilcox, which will play in the Open Division as the No. 8 seed -- thus opening the door for the Titans in Division I.

The Titans have a bye into Saturday's quarterfinals along with Palo Alto (11-12), which received a surprisingly high No. 3 seed. Menlo-Atherton (16-9) also will play in Division I as the No. 7 seed. The Bears host a second-round game Thursday.

Sacred Heart Prep (17-7) is more of a conventional No. 1 seed -- in Division IV -- after sharing the West Bay Athletic League title. The Gators played a tough schedule that included a win over Serra, which is playing in the Open Division.

Also in Division IV is Menlo School (11-13), the No. 5 seed. The Knights will host a second-round game Thursday (7 p.m.) and could face SHP in the semifinals -- set for Menlo's gym on March 4.

The Pinewood boys (20-4) are the final No. 1 seed, much deserved in Division V where the competition is lacking. Priory (14-9) is the No. 2 seed and Eastside Prep (9-15) is No. 5. Pinewood swept both local rivals during the WBAL season.

In the girls' Open Division, Pinewood (24-2) is the No. 4 seed and Eastside Prep (18-8) is No. 7, despite the face EPrep defeated Pinewood in the WBAL playoff finals Saturday. Both teams open Friday and are guaranteed berths into the NorCal playoffs, probably in Division V.

Five other local teams also will be continuing their respective seasons this week.

The Menlo girls (15-11) are the No. 2 seed in Division IV while Sacred Heart Prep (13-12) is No. 3 and Castilleja (17-9) is No. 5. The Gators open with a home game Thursday at 7 p.m.

In boys' Division I, Menlo-Atherton (16-8) is a No. 3 seed and Palo Alto (13-10) is a No. 6. The Vikings open Thursday at home and, with a win, will face the Bears on Saturday at Piedmont Hills.
