Fire district vehicle involved in car crash

No injuries when car hit fire truck

A Menlo Park Fire Protection District vehicle was involved in a crash in East Palo Alto Friday afternoon, a police dispatcher said.

When a ladder truck was turning right, a car struck the rear wheel and tire, causing only minor damage to the truck, but pulling it out of service, Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman said.

The incident occurred around 2:45 p.m. near University Avenue and Bell Street, the East Palo Alto police dispatcher said.

No injuries were reported in the crash, according to the dispatcher.

Given that the fire truck weighs close to 65,000 pounds, "it's hard to stop on a dime. Ö Sometimes there's more than one piece of equipment coming," Schapelhouman added. "The driver assumed that the truck had passed, but it was turning right. It's not like a sports car."

With more people on the road, it's important to pay attention, Schapelhouman said.
