Stanford remains atop the Directors' Cup ranks once again

The 19-time reigning champion Stanford Cardinal once again leads Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings following the fall season.

The final sport to be unofficially tabulated was football, where Stanford's 10th place finish in the final USA Today/Coaches poll provided another boost over competing schools. The Cardinal finished the fall season with a total of 461.25 points, well ahead of second-place Michigan State (382.5).

Stanford has won the all-sports competition honoring the nation's best athletic program every year except the inaugural year when the Cardinal finished second.

This fall, Stanford earned top-10 finished in men's water polo (third), women's volleyball (fifth), men's soccer (ninth), women's soccer (ninth) and football (10th) while also recording top-20 finishes in women's cross country (11th) and men's cross country (19th).

Last year Stanford extended its streak of seasons with at least one NCAA title to a remarkable 37.

The Florida State Seminoles moved into third after capturing the BCS National Championship and have 351.5 total points. North Carolina moved up to fourth thanks to a bowl victory and now has a total of 333 points. After dropping three spots, Virginia completes the top five and still has 323 points.

To date, all nine fall NCAA championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: women's cross country (Providence); men's cross country (Colorado); field hockey (Connecticut); women's soccer (UCLA); men's soccer (Notre Dame); men's water polo (USC); women's volleyball (Penn State); FCS football (North Dakota State); FBS football (Florida State).

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's.
