Stanford's Scherer finishes third at wrestling tournament

Stanford senior 197-pounder Dan Scherer placed third at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Sunday, in Reno, Nev. Senior Garrett Schaner took fourth place at 157 pounds.

Scherer posted a 5-1 record, including two falls, to lead the Cardinal. After dropping an 8-5 decision to 13th-ranked Phil Wellington of Ohio, he shut out Nebraska's Spencer Johnson (6-0) and then defeated Boise State's Cody Dixon, 5-3, in the third-place match.

Schaner, who hails from Big Rapids, Mich., went 5-2 on the day to move to 11-8 overall this year. He was sent to the consolation bracket by Chattanooga's Alex Hudson who tallied a 5-4 decision over Schaner. They met again in the third-place match where Hudson came out on top, 8-6.

Other Cardinal wrestlers finishing the day with at least three wins were junior 149-pounder Josh Lauderdale (3-2), redshirt freshman 165-pounder Jim Wilson (4-2), freshman 174-pounder Keaton Subjeck (5-2), redshirt freshman Zach Nevills (4-2), freshman 184-pounder Garet Krohn (3-2), sophomore 184-pounder Thomas Kimbrell (4-2) and freshman heavyweight Nathan Butler (4-2).

Stanford will bring in the New Year in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the third annual Southern Scuffle. The tournament will take place Jan. 1-2 at McKenzie Arena.
