Stanford fifth-year senior Trent Murphy has been named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week and one of 16 semifinalists for the 19th Chuck Bednarik Award, which honors the most outstanding defensive player of the year.
Murphy enters this week's bye week ranked No. 4 nationally in sacks with 9.5 and seventh with 13.0 tackles for a loss.
Murphy, who hails from Mesa, Ariz., led a tenacious Stanford defense to a 20-12 victory at Oregon State last week. Murphy collected 3.5 tackles for a loss including 2.5 sacks among eight total tackles. He broke up one pass, blocked an extra point and had one quarterback hurry to earn the Pac-12 honor.
All told, Stanford sacked the nation's leading passer, Sean Mannion, eight times and logged 13 tackles for a loss while holding the Beavers to 150 yards under their season passing average. OSU finished the night with 17 net rushing yards.
The Cardinal stopped OSU four times on fourth down including a pass breakup in the end zone with seven seconds remaining.
Stanford, ranked fifth in the latest BCS standings (No. 6 AP and No. 7 USA Today), returns to Stanford Stadium Nov. 7 when the Cardinal hosts No. 2/2 Oregon in a 6 p.m. Thursday night game on ESPN.
The game has been sold out for months but limited standing-room-only tickets are currently available.
