Festival: Mountain View Oktoberfest

Steins Beer Garden & Restaurant, the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce and Tied House are hosting an Oktoberfest celebration this weekend, Oct. 5 and 6 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. There will be authentic German beer, German food from local vendors, live music and children's activities. 895 Villa St., Mountain View. Go to eventbrite.com.

Environment: Solar Homes Tour

"The Road to Zero Net Energy" is part of the 2013 Solar Homes Tour and includes a self-guided tour of seven local homes, including a newly built Zero Net Energy house and several passive designed homes. Speak to the owners about the methods they use to reduce their energy bills. There will be many electric vehicles (EVs) to check out as well as two info sessions. The event is Saturday, Oct. 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Lucie Stern Community Center, 1305 Middlefield Road. Go to challengesuccess.org.

Richard Dawkins, author of "An Appetite for Wonder: The Making of a Scientist," will speak at Kepler's Books (1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park) on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Dawkins has been active in debates surrounding creationism, intelligent design and religion. His new book is a memoir covering his early life in colonial Kenya, studies at Oxford University and the creation of his books and philosophy. Go to keplers.com.

Community: St. Ann Choir 50th Anniversary

The St. Ann Choir will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a Latin mass on Sunday, Oct. 6, noon to 1:15 p.m. A reception will follow. St. Thomas Aquinas Church at 751 Waverley St., Palo Alto. Go to stannchoir.org.
