California Avenue businesses have a new big-name neighbor in the online user-review company Yelp, according to a company blog post.
The San Francisco-based Internet company announced Wednesday that it was expanding to build a satellite office for Yelp engineers in Palo Alto, "just blocks from the California Avenue Caltrain station."
The post states that the office would mainly be used for Yelp engineers. It pitches the space as a way for Silicon Valley engineers to be able to work for Yelp without having to make the long, traffic-ridden commute to the company's downtown San Francisco headquarters.
A Yelp spokeswoman said there are already some engineers working at the space on 490 California Ave. and that the company will have a team of 20-25 engineers working there.
"The objective of opening this office was to find a site with good proximity to the engineering talent pool further down the peninsula and with good commuter access for South and East Bay employees who wish to work closer to their homes in that area," she stated in an email. "Palo Alto, on the Caltrain corridor, fits those objectives. The office is within convenient walking distance to a train station, to bus-lines and to numerous local businesses which was also an important consideration for Yelpers."
The announcement comes as Yelp moves its San Francisco headquarters to the old Pac Bell building at 140 Montgomery St. in San Francisco.
Yelp stated that it serves an average of more than 108 million unique visitors each month, an increasing number through mobile devices, and with more than 42 million online reviews.
