San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, a Palo Alto High School graduate, will toss the coin tonight as Paly inaugurates its renovated football field.
A Paly band will play the national anthem and students will give a short performance following a 7:10 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony. Kickoff for Paly's varsity game against San Benito High School will be at 7:30 p.m.
The first 1,000 guests to arrive will be given Paly pompoms.
Football field renovations completed in the past year include a new concession stand and restrooms, new grandstands with ramps and an elevator to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act, a new entry tower and new equipment-storage areas.
Signs installed this summer on the new entry tower and above the traditional gates to the field dub the space "Viking Stadium." A wooden sign outside the field area facing Churchill calls it "Palo Alto High School Howard C. 'Hod' Ray Athletic Field."
