Stanford junior Patrick Rodgers helped the United States take an 8-4 lead over Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup on Saturday at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York.
The USA needs 5½ points on Sunday to regain the Walker Cup, while GB&I will need nine of the possible 14 points to retain it.
Rodgers and Justin Thomas defeated Gavin Moynihan and Kevin Phelan, 2 and 1, in the foursome competition.
The USA took the lead for good in the see-saw match when Rodgers hit a 47-yard wedge for a conceded par on No. 15.
Thomas set Rodgers up for the match-clinching birdie on No. 17, hitting a 111-yard wedge to 6 feet.
Moynihan salvaged the only full point of the afternoon for GB&I, holding off Rodgers for a 2-and-1 victory in singles matches.
