Stanford junior Alex Bowen scored three goals and the USA men's junior national water polo team earned its first victory at the FINA Junior World Championships with a 12-10 victor over Slovakia in Szombathely, Hungary on Tuesday.
Garrett Danner recorded 12 saves in goal as Team USA completes group play Wednesday with a match against Russia.
Nolan McConnell got things going for Team USA with the first goal of the day for a 1-0 lead.
The teams traded goals with Jackson Kimbell and Cardinal sophomore Adam Abdulhamid also scoring for the United States and the score was even at 3-3 after the first.
Slovakia went ahead in the second period as they outscored the United States 4-2 to grab a 7-5 lead at halftime.
In the third period, after Slovakia took an 8-5 lead, Abdulhamid and Ryder Roberts connected to cut the deficit to 8-7 headed to the fourth.
The final period belonged to the United States. Chancellor Ramirez and Danny McClintick hit for Team USA to take the lead at 9-8. Slovakia responded with a goal to even the match at 9-9. The two sides would trade goals again leading to a 10-10 match with 5:42 remaining.
The United States would take over from there, scoring two straight from Roberts and Bowen to go ahead 12-10 and take the match by two.
