Stanford sophomore Bret Bonanni scored three goals but the USA men's junior national water polo team opened play at the FINA Junior World Championships with an 8-6 loss to Spain on Monday at Szombathely, Hungary.
The Americans meet Slovakia on Tuesday as group play continues.
Spain took a 2-0 lead before Bonanni put the U.S. on the scoreboard. Spain responded with two more goals to grab a 4-1 lead. The Americans drew within 5-3 by halftime.
Team USA fell behind 8-3 early in the fourth period before starting to rally. Stanford junior Alex Bowen, who had two goals, scored with less than a minute to play to draw the U.S. within 8-6.
