A man who is wanted by police for burglary escaped a manhunt in Palo Alto on Friday afternoon, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The incident began at 3:23 p.m. A CHP officer stopped a 1995 red Audi with expirednregistration tags near Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View, east of U.S. Highway 101. The man gave the officer false identification. He drove away when thenofficernasked him to step out of the car, CHP spokesman Art Monteil said.
Police pursued the vehicle, which was located near Corporation Way and East Bayshore Road. The man, who had a $45,000 warrant out for his arrest, fled on foot. Police from Palo Alto, Mountain View, the CHP and Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office set up a perimeter from Shoreline Park to north of Adobe Creek and used a helicopter to search for the fugitive.
Google's day care center was locked down as a precaution by staff after they saw security guards in the area, according to police radio reports.
The man was not located and the search was called off at 5:40 p.m. He is not considered armed or dangerous, Monteil said.
The fugitive is described as a 30-year-old Filipino. He is 5-feet-6-inches tall, bald, and weighs 120 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans and a light-colored shirt and had no shoes. The CHP has not yet releasing his name.
In addition to the burglary warrant, he now faces charges of fleeing an officer, Monteil said. Anyone who sees the man is asked to call 9-1-1.
