The Palo Alto school district so far has not been successful in its search for a new communication coordinator but the search will remain open until May 31, officials said.
"We did not find someone who fit the position and so we are going to re-open it," Superintendent Kevin Skelly said.
District Human Resources Director Eric Goddard said the position will be posted until May 31.
"The search is still on. Applications are being accepted," Goddard said in an email.
A $150,000 budget allocation for the position was approved by the Board of Education in March as one of 13 supplemental budget items totaling $2.6 million.
Critics of the district characterized the new position as an attempt to find someone to cover up shortcomings of school staff. But board members said it was needed to provide "timely information and transparency" to a public making a high volume of information requests to an overwhelmed staff.
The district employed a public-information officer in the past but the position was eliminated in budget cuts.
"We were not successful in finding a communications coordinator," he wrote in a May 10 email to board members. "Here's hoping we have more luck in the future."
