Police units from Palo Alto and Mountain View searched the area around the intersection of San Antonio and East Charleston roads and found the Los Angeles man hiding in the back of a truck at the warehouse next to Lifetime Pools Inc., according to the police scanner.
The man may have been one of the two men involved in shoplifting at Fry's Electronics on Portage Avenue that police said amounted to $1,200. Police have a second man in custody who they believe was also involved.
An officer conducted a traffic stop after he observed two men matching the description of the the reported shoplifters get into a car at Fry's. One of the men fled the scene during the stop, and the other stayed in the car, Palo Alto Police Lt. Zach Perron said.
The man who police say fled the scene was black and wore a long black jacket, skinny black jeans and a blue sweatshirt. Police said he was on probation for narcotics violations.
Police said witnesses saw the man running on San Antonio Road toward U.S. Hwy. 101, where he was almost hit by a car and fell face-first into the ground, police said.
Police received a call from a nearby preschool, where parents and teachers were concerned because of the police activity in the area. In response, police sent one of the nearby roaming units in the area to the school.
Police identified the man as the one they were looking for at 9:30 a.m.
