Stanford senior water polo goalie Kate Baldoni was named KAP 7 MPSF Player of the Week after anchoring the defensive effort in the second-ranked Cardinal's 8-1 win over No. 4 UCLA last weekend.
The win clinched a top-two seed for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Berkeley on April 26-28. This Saturday, the Cardinal will visit No. 1 USC (4 p.m.) with the tournament's top seed at stake.
Baldoni made seven saves and marshaled a Cardinal defense that clamped down on the Bruins, keeping UCLA off the scoreboard until just 4:45 remained in the game. The Cardinal defense also killed off six 6-on-5 situations, including two in the second quarter that helped preserve a 2-0 lead.
Baldoni's performance lowered her goals-against average to 4.28 goals per game, second only to teammate Gabby Stone's 4.22 figure. Saturday's concession of just one goal also lowered Stanford's MPSF-leading team defense to just 4.29 goals per game as well.
