Palo Alto firefighters on Thursday rescued a construction worker who fell off the framing of an El Camino Way building and landed on the building's second-floor deck.
The worker, 33, injured his left leg after tumbling about 12 feet to the deck, firefighters said in a statement. The building at 4041 El Camino Way, which houses the Palo Alto Commons senior-housing facility, is now undergoing expansion. The area where the incident had occurred had no stairs in place and the first two stories consisted only of framing.
After arriving at the scene shortly after 12:30 p.m., firefighters and medics treated the victim and secured him in a Stokes basket. They then used ropes and the boom of a fire truck to lower the worker to the ground. He was awake and spoke to firefighters during the operation, according to the department's statement.
The man was delivered to the medics to the ground within 49 minutes of the first fire engine's arrival and then transported to a hospital for further treatment.
