East Palo Alto and Menlo Park police arrested two men in connection with a gun arsenal, police spokeswoman Officer Veronica Barries said Tuesday, March 20.
Agents searched a Redwood City storage locker at an undisclosed location and recovered seven rifles, 10 handguns and 5,000 rounds of ammunition. Those numbers could change as police continue their investigation, Barries said.
Officers from East Palo Alto's Special Duty Unit, the Menlo Park Police Department's narcotic Enforcement Team and state parole agents were involved in the investigation and arrest.
The joint investigation was a result of a collaborative agreement called "Operation SMART," which stands for "strategic multi-agency response team" and is designed to address gang-related violence in East Palo Alto and Menlo Park.
Police obtained a warrant to search the storage locker after developing credible information about the weapons cache. The two men, both adults, were arrested and are being held in San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City on parole and probation violations. Their names have not yet been released.
Barries said the extent of the arsenal and charges against the pair have not yet been compiled. More information will be reported on Palo Alto Online as it becomes available.
