Palo Alto averages were behind those of Mountain View-Los Altos High School District ($101,293); Las Lomitas Elementary School District ($92,494); Menlo Park City School District ($90,271) and Woodside Elementary School District ($88,406).
Palo Alto averages were ahead of those in the Sequoia Union High School District ($81,674); Los Altos Elementary School District ($73,497); Redwood City Elementary School District ($70,965); San Jose Unified School District ($67,157) and Ravenswood City School District ($58,844).
Palo Alto also was in the middle of nearby districts in its highest-paid ($103,836) and starting ($51,422) teacher salaries.
The top-paying nearby district in that category was Mountain View-Los Altos High School District at $117,351.
The California-wide average teacher salary for a K-12 district like Palo Alto was $61,849.
Citing rising Bay Area rents and increasing class sizes, the Palo Alto Educators Association recently have asked for salary increases. Last month, the Board of Education voted to pay teachers and staff a onetime bonus equivalent to 1 percent of 2011-12 salary.
