A Sunnyvale man was arrested for an attempted robbery in downtown Palo Alto on Saturday, Oct. 13, after he repeatedly struck the victim in the face after demanding money.
Palo Alto police responded to a call of a fight in progress at about 4:24 p.m. in the 200 block of University Avenue between Emerson and Ramona streets. The victim, a man, told police he was assaulted after refusing to hand over his money. The perpetrator, identified by police as Jesus Gabriel Cruz, 25, a transient, left the scene after punching the victim several times.
Police located Cruz downtown and attempted to detain him. He resisted arrest and made direct threats to the officers, police spokesman Sgt. Sal Madrigal said.
Cruz was arrested on charges of attempted robbery and resisting and deterring an officer -- both felonies. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail in San Jose. The victim had redness and swelling to his face but was not otherwise injured, Madrigal said.
