Author and Stanford University School of Medicine professor Abraham Verghese will speak on his two careers at 7 p.m. tonight, Sept. 18. The event is at the Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center, 555 Middlefield Road, Atherton. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. Go to keplers.com.

Dance: Lindy hop lessons

Dancer Carla Heiney will give a free community swing/lindy hop lesson on downtown Redwood City's Courthouse Square tonight, Sept. 18. A 30-minute demonstration starts at 6 p.m., with dancing continuing until 8 p.m. The outdoor event is part of the city's annual series of dance, music and movie events. Go to redwoodcity.org.
