Music: Michael O'Neill Quintet and Kenny Washington

Michael O'Neill has performed with several of the Bay Area's big bands, including a two-year stint with the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra. Kenny Washington sings with more than a four-octave range. June 18, 6-8 p.m. at Downtown Jazz, 2600 Block of Broadway, Redwood City. Go to redwoodcity.org.

Author talk: Lev Grossman

"The Magicians" was labeled by critics and many fans as "Narnia for adults." Grossman discusses what's in store for the graduates of the Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. June 18, 7-8 p.m. at Cubberley Theatre, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.

at least these are musical events. also consider going to the stanford jazz workshops that happen annually
