A man held up Baskin Robbins on Middlefield Road late Thursday, threatened a clerk with a semi-automatic gun and leaving with an unknown amount of money, Palo Alto Police Sgt. Sandra Brown said Friday.
The man entered the ice-cream store around 10 p.m. as it was closing. He waited behind a customer, then said something about a burglary and showed the gun to the clerk, Brown said.
"She couldn't really understand what he was saying so she didn't pay him any attention. She thought he was buying ice cream," Brown said.
Even after seeing the gun, the clerk still thought the man was joking, Brown said.
"She got the clue when he didn't leave," Brown said.
She then gave him an unknown amount of money, she said.
Witnesses heard a motorcycle leaving.
The suspect is thought to be black, in his 20s, 6 feet 1 inch tall, 160 pounds and a medium build. During the burglary, he wore a motorcycle helmet and had a bandana wrapped around his face. He was also wearing gloves and a jacket, Brown said.
Baskin Robbins is located near Safeway at 2615 Middlefield Road.
