Palo Alto police and a CHP helicopter provided backup assistance early Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 20) to Fremont police in arresting an 18-year-old man in the investigation of the highly publicized Feb. 16 wedding-reception homicide there.
The man is a Hayward resident, Fremont Detective Bill Veteran said.
The man was later identified as Jason Mejia, who had been cited in a traffic stop in Palo Alto two days earlier, Palo Alto Sgt. Sandra Brown said.
Officers surrounded a house at 245 Wilton Ave., near Park Boulevard, while Fremont detectives moved in, with the helicopter buzzing over the neighborhood south of Page Mill Road near El Camino Real.
Veteran said he did not know what connection Mejia had to the Wilton Avenue house. He also didn't know what specific charges were filed against Mejia.
"But there is a gang nexus" to the Feb. 16 shooting, Veteran added.
Words were exchanged during the wedding reception, Veteran said. A man left, returned with a gun and "fired several rounds" into a crowd of people. One person was killed and a second seriously wounded.
The police action in Palo Alto began shortly after 1 p.m. and included Palo Alto paramedics responding to the house because an older woman was experiencing respiratory distress, Brown said.
Veteran said Fremont officers were in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the Wilton Avenue house.
