Todd David Burpee pleaded not guilty this morning to charges he abducted and sexually assaulted a Gunn High School student Oct. 30.
He is also charged with sexually assaulting her.
The girl escaped from a parked car in Sunnyvale when Burpee left her unattended, flagged down a passing motorist and then sought help from Sunnyvale police.
Palo Alto and Sunnyvale police searched the immediate area Oct. 30 without locating Burpee.
A Palo Alto officer, Eric Bulatao, recognized Burpee when the victim was able to describe her attacker to a police sketch artist. Palo Alto police then located and arrested Burpee in San Jose two days after the assault and kidnapping.
After his arrest, Burpee admitted to Palo Alto police that he abducted and sexually assaulted the Gunn student because he was angry after having a fight with his girlfriend.
"It could have been anyone," he told detectives. "It could have been a guy. I was just mad."
Burpee is facing a maximum sentence of life in prison, if convicted.
His next court appearance is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. April 2 in Palo Alto.
